Five Deck Design Ideas

  • Traditional
    • A traditional deck is square or rectangular, made from pressure-treated wood, redwood, or cedar. Generally speaking, decks aren’t cheap, but of all the styles discussed here, this is your least expensive option. Expect to power-wash the deck once a year and to seal it every one or two years. Maintained properly, yours can last as long as 30 years. Though not visually stunning to begin with, wood decks are enhanced by a stand-out stain or paint color, or by the addition of decorative caps to the posts that provide structural support.
  • Low Maintenance
    • If you think of the deck as a place to escape the burden of work, including the work of home maintenance, then you may wish to opt for a low-maintenance deck material, such as vinyl, plastic, or composite. Low-maintenance decking requires little more than occasional sweeping. Compared to wood decks, these are more expensive to build, but you’ll save money over time not having to invest in repair, as inorganic boards neither rot nor splinter.
  • Modern
    • Modern decks are all about clean lines and muted color palettes. They are constructed from a range of materials, but when made of wood, only a select few species are typically used: teak, ipe, mahogany or Brazilian cherry. Many modern decks are identifiable by their railings—or their lack thereof. A free-floating polished wood platform can look rather Zen-like. Meanwhile, perimeters composed of steel cables or glass panels deliver equally sleek contemporary flair.
  • Split Level
    • Split-level decks enable you to have multiple outdoor living areas. They are especially suitable for yards with severe slopes, in that each subsequent deck level can step down with the angled terrain. Like modern decks, split-levels are built from a range of materials, with or without railings. An advantage of tiered deck designs is that you can have the best of both worlds
  • Gourmet
    • If you’re tired of getting by with a rickety and rusty old barbecue, consider spicing things up with an outdoor kitchen. No matter what your deck is made of concrete is the ideal material to use in constructing al fresco cooking zones. Concrete is heavy, though, so be sure your deck supports are strong enough to hold the additional weight. For the family that enjoys hosting a get-together, going out of your way here can be well worth the hassle.

What Exactly is Composite Decking? And Why IPE Wood is Best

Are you torn between choosing the right wood for your deck? When it comes between ipe vs composite decking, there are many factors you need to balance out. Here at Prime Wood Decking, our team is here to make sure you make the perfect choice for you. We specialize in Ipe wood decking and are conveniently located in Miami.

What is Composite Decking?

Composite decking is a man-made building product that includes an approximately equal mix of recycled wood fibers and recycled plastic. Because composite decking products are so durable and impervious to rot, they have a much longer lifespan than wood decks.

Composite decking is the fastest growing wood deck alternative on the market.  It boasts low maintenance and a much longer lifespan than wood decking. Advancements in the way composite decking products are made have allowed composite decking manufacturers to simulate the look of many exotic hardwoods to give the homeowner options they typically would not have when designing and building a deck.

Ipe vs Composite Decking

Ipe wood is so dense that it actually sinks in water, and it comes naturally loaded with oils that help it resist insects as well as moisture. These attributes make it one of the longest-lasting natural materials for decks available. However, it does have some drawbacks. The density of the wood makes staining it impossible, meaning it only comes in one color. And, its legendary hardness means that it needs to be worked carefully with carbide tools—something usually only required for metalworking—causing a significant increase in labor costs. Despite its toughness, ipe does require maintenance—for one thing, it must be washed and oiled regularly to preserve its natural rich tones, otherwise, it fades to a silvery color.

Composites are a newer option made from a combination of wood (or another natural fiber like bamboo) and plastics. These decking materials are far denser than pressure-treated lumber, which helps them to resist moisture better, and the plastic in them discourages insects. High-quality composites have a full, protective resin ‘capping,’ which stands up to moisture and UV damage to better protect the entire board. Composite boards are also available in a wide variety of colors—and even textures—that will match nearly any style of the house. They also have the advantage of being easy to work with normal woodworking tools, and they make use of recycled plastics and wood byproducts (like sawdust), or fast-growing plants like bamboo, rather than slow-growing rainforest trees.

Why IPE Decking Is One Of the Most Popular Wood Types In 2019

decking supplies in Miami

Ipe decking is getting more and more popular. This is a trend that is not going anywhere, anytime soon. You must jump on the train! Here at Prime Wood Decking, we have all the decking supplies you need to make sure your Ipe deck is the best in Miami. We are expert Miami deck builders that are sure to give your home the perfect addition. But why is this wood so popular? We are here today to break that down for you!

Top Reasons Why Ipe Decking is So Popular

  • Low Ipe Decking Cost
    • In 2016, 25% of home remodeling projects focused on adding decks to already-built homes. One of the many reasons why ipe is a very popular addition to homes is its low cost. Ipe prices can even equal synthetic plastic deck material. Ipe wood can seem more expensive than most other wood materials. In the long run, it will be a great investment and will cost you less. We’ll further explain below the durability of the ipe wood.
  • Ipe Decking Has Durability and High Density
    • You want to create a wooden deck or porch that lasts for a long time. Ipe hardwood is tough as nails and has a high density. It’s not a surprise that it earned the nickname “ironwood.” Ipe wood’s high density makes it the best decking material according to many deck makers. This dense characteristic makes ipe wood long-lasting and sturdy. Several resistances come from the high density of this redwood species. Ipe wood has a Class A fire-resistance rating. This is comparable to the resistance of steel and concrete against fire. The wood’s density, rugged surface, and natural moisture content help.
  • Ipe Wood Is Sustainable and Eco-Friendly
    • Among the various typical decking options, ipe wood has great sustainability. It is very sturdy. This leads to fewer instances of deck wood replacement. Compared to most wood types for deck boards, ipe wood can last much longer. With the right maintenance, it can weather the elements for over 75 years. In the case of termite attacks, it can hold out against them for up to 15 years.
  • Retains Cool Surfaces
    • In its original state, Brazilian hardwood or ipe has high moisture content. Through the slow drying process, the moisture content level goes down. This is to prevent the ipe wood from cracking and splitting. Since ipe hardwood has a natural capacity to keep less heat, it will stay cool in the summer months. Using ipe decking will be better than using composite and plastic decking. It also has a tendency to crack less, giving you fewer chances of getting splinters.
  • Low Maintenance
    • Ipe helps create the ideal deck for many homeowners. It has great aesthetic value, great efficiency, and incredible stability. Still, without the right maintenance, it can wear out faster than it should. The great thing about ipe decking is that it doesn’t need a lot to keep it in tip-top shape. All you need is regular cleaning. Sweep it every day to clear out the sap, pollen, and leaves. Should debris remain, rinse it out.

Durable Ipe Decking & Color Options For Everyone’s Taste

ipe wood color in Miami

When it comes to wood decking, color is one of the most essential variables to look out for. While the design is very important, imagine having the perfect deck covered in the completely wrong color. It would be a disaster. Luckily, here at Prime Wood Decking, we specialize in Ipe wood color. This is sure to provide the best results in your wood decking. Our team is here to make sure you get the best looking Ipe decking in Miami.

Color Can Get Complicated

Color is a sticky subject for lumber dealers. More specifically, matching the color of different boards of the same species. Wood is an organic product. Maybe that goes without saying, but in today’s engineered product world, it is important to realize that wood is unique.

It isn’t poured or extruded or dyed or infused or crackle painted (at least I hope not). Every piece you get is different. Sure, it has a general appearance from one species to the next, and I can look at a board and tell you it is Cherry, Teak, Utile or Ipe.

But amongst an entire pile of any of those species, you will find differences in color and grain as well as imperfections that make each board unique. Sometimes you will even find an odd board that you can’t identify. This is why Ipe wood is the best choice and looks the best!

Ipe Wood Color is the Best Option

Ipe and Cumaru grow across a very large geographic region. You will find different climates and soil chemistry from one side of Brazil to the other that will affect the color of the board.

Most of this is based on the board’s density, but you will also find some regions producing more mineral streaking, or in some instances, temporary soil chemistry changes due to flooding or fire.

You will find dark streaks and sometimes stark color changes on either side of a weather event. It comes in a broad range of colors such as reddish-brown, tan, olive, and dark brown.

Ipe wood structures are hard, strong, and naturally resistant to rot, abrasion, weather, and insects. It is almost twice as dense as most woods and up to five times harder. It is medium to darker brown in color, like mahogany, so not only lasts a long time but has the beauty of a fine interior wood. Check our website to get an idea at how great this wood would look for your home.

Mold-Free Maintenance Tips for IPE Wood Decks

ipe decking maintenance in miami

Living in Miami it is safe to say that the air is very wet. Humidity seems to always be present in this South Florida city. But what does this mean for your wood deck? It implies the vulnerability to more mold. Here at Prime Wood Decking, our experts are here to provide you with proper IPE decking maintenance to avoid this from happening in the first place. When it comes to your IPE decking, we are the experts you can trust.

IPE is Basically IRONWOOD!

They don’t call Ipe wood “ironwood” for nothing.  You can break screws on it, dull saw blades, and Ipe lumber laughs in the face of rain and snow.  Rot and molds hold no fear for this beautiful Brazilian hardwood. Using it on your deck, your fence, siding, whatever, will make your neighbors jealous.  The true handymen in the neighborhood will ask to come over so that they can touch it and caress it.

As beautiful as Ipe wood decking is, you can mess it up, if you don’t care for it properly.  Just think of it as an expensive car. It’s made to take stand up to practically anything and everything.  But if you don’t tune it up, care for it regularly, things can go wrong.

Our Tips For IPE Decking Maintenance

  • The first is the most straightforward and most sensible: keep your decking clean.  It’s really as simple as keeping the leaves and refuse off your deck. Sweep it off once a week or so.  When the dog or the kids get mud all over the deck, hose it down. Make sure that you get anything that has fallen between the cracks out as well.
  • Don’t let anything that can leave rust on the deck sitting there, such as metal chairs, or propane tanks. Wooden chairs are the best.
  • When installing the deck, make sure that all the all your deck wood is sealed on all four sides, including the ends. Though Ipe wood is highly resistant to mold and fungus because of its dense makeup, if the ends aren’t sealed, that can be the easiest place for it to enter.
  • Make sure the wood has time to dry after you’ve sealed it. If not, it’s going to look a fright after it’s installed.
  • Don’t use film forming coatings. They may be great for boats that have teak wood and such, but not so much for your deck.
  • You most certainly need to use penetrating oils to help the wood keep that dark color. But when applying the oils, a light touch is what you need.  Ipe wood throws the excess oil right back at you. If you leave the extra oil, it will become tacky and can become a breeding ground for molds and/or fungus.  Apply the oil with a brush and use a cloth to wipe up the extra oil.
  • Don’t use a sprayer to apply the oil/stain. It goes on best when you use a brush, and remember to wipe up after yourself, as it were.
  • Pay attention to the weather forecast for when you plan to clean and restain. You need to allow for drying time. If it starts raining while the finish is still drying you’re going to see all the little raindrops captured in the spots they’ll leave on the deck.  Make sure it’s going to nice a sunny for a while when you do the job.

How to Install

  • Apply a vapor barrier to the wall.
  • Attach 3/4″ furring strips over the vapor barrier every 16″.
  • Start at the bottom of the wall… To start the installation of a siding board predrill holes above each furring strip with a 1/8″ drill bit. If Ipe Plugs are going to be used to conceal this initial fastener then a 3/8″ drill bit should be used to make a hole for each Ipe Plug to fit into.
  • Drive a 3″ stainless steel screw through the 1/8″ predrilled hole in the last step. This will secure the bottom half of each siding board.
  • Next, with a 1/8″ drill bit predrill a hole through the narrow part of the siding board that protrudes against the wall on the top of the board.
  • Drive a 3″ stainless steel screw through the 1/8″ predrilled hole in the last step. There is no need to worry about plugging this hole as the next board that is installed will cover this fastener.
  • Repeat the above steps for the rest of the siding boards up the wall.

Is IPE is Naturally Resistant To Bugs & Termites?

Termite resistant wood Miami

When it comes to picking out wood for your deck, it is critical that you find termite resistant wood to save yourself from a headache later down the road. People believe that one of the best woods is IPE wood decking, but some aren’t quite sure. That is why the experts at Prime Wood Decking in Miami are breaking down all of the information and details about this wood and why it may be in your best interest to choose this wood. Keep reading for all of the details!

Why IPE Is The Top Termite Resistant Wood

There is nothing worse than getting a termite infestation in your house or deck. These small bugs that resemble ants can do massive damage in a short amount of time. That is why when you are picking out wood for your deck, it is critical that you pay attention to the type of wood you are choosing. For example, woods like cedar and redwood are naturally resistant to a termite infestation. However, other woods are highly susceptible to termites and quickly become their next snack. Although they are naturally resistant to termites, the truth is that they won’t last that long. These types of wood have not been able to stand the test of time, which means that choosing them means you will need to do constant staining, finishing, and maintenance to make sure that they look as good as the withstand the bugs! If you choose other types of wood, there are ways to make them termite resistant, like treating them with different products and chemicals, but these can end up causing harm to you, your family, and even your pets.

This is why so many homeowners have started looking into IPE wood decking when they want to build a new deck for their home. IPE wood was tested by the U.S Naval laboratory and what they found was that the wood could stand against termite attacks for about fifteen years. There hasn’t been any other wood that has been able to withstand termite attacks in-ground for that long. This means that picking the right wood for your deck project has the ability to save you a lot of time and money because you’ll be able to avoid having to change boards or treating the deck for termites to get rid of them. Not only has the IPE wood been able to withstand termite attacks, but it is able to stand against time and conditions, keeping its natural look and appeal. By choosing IPE wood you may have to spend a little more money upfront, but think about the amount of money that you will save by avoiding potential problems in the future, it is a sound investment that will be able to last as long as your home.

ipe lumber in Miami

What Grade Do You Sell On IPE Decking?

We carry all high-quality premium IPE wood. This is the highest grade wood available that is hand-selected and basically free from defects. The low levels that we don’t carry are commercial wood and IPE grade utilities, all of which are exported to Asia and Europe.

What Size of Wood Deck IPE Lumber Sells for IPE Decking?

We carry 4 inches and 6 inches wide in 5/4 inches and 1-inch thickness as our standard decking thickness. The length we offer is from 7 to 20 feet. Even though we have available IPE wood with a width of 4 to 12 inches and a thickness of 1 to 8 inches is also available.

Can I Choose a Certain IPE Decking Length?

If we have stock, you are welcome to choose a certain length. But we may not have a certain length depending on the availability of our current stock.

Am I Saving Money Depending on the Length of IPE Decking That I Ordered?

Yes, because certain lengths are harder to come and their high demand is valued differently.

Do You Need to Use Hidden Fasteners or Top Screws?

Depends on the look you want. When installed, your option is a top screw that is flat; screw-top counters and sinks, and hidden fasteners. So it all depends on whether the appearance of the screw is a problem with your aesthetic plan for your patio or decking. That said, top locking is usually safer than hidden fasteners and hidden fasteners add around $ 1 per foot for the price of your project.

What Thickness Should I Order?

This choice depends on many different factors including what you want from your deck including the final appearance – do you like boards that are thicker or thinner? Also, the area and environment of residence have a big effect because depending on the amount of extreme temperature, you want a thicker board for snow loads. What do you use (pool, restaurant, sea dock, etc.)? Depending on the traffic load, building code, and desired usage, you will want different thicknesses. Will this decking be used for decks or porches? Depending on the last use, you might want a thicker board. What type of ventilation under the deck is available? The less ventilation below, the more space you want to place between the boards and the thicker the board you want to be to resist the flexibility of the moisture. Also, the amount of direct sunlight can affect the optimal thickness. So, really the best plan is to design your deck and then contact our Miami deck builders for advice on the best thickness for your needs.

The Best Wood Sealant: IPE Deck Oil.

The weathering process of wood is caused by a mix of chemical, mechanical and some biological changes, all of that occurs instantaneously and also affects each other. For example, when air moves over the surface of a wood deck, several things like dirt, pollens, pollutants causes replacement of the exposed colored cells of the wood. This also occurs because of the exposure to sun ultraviolet rays, and also the salt particles in the coastal areas. This is the reason why IPE wood turns grey in color.

Therefore, while working with a wood surface it’s vital to use a sealant to prevent the wood surface from all sorts of outside damage. Failing to do so results in wood damage and money wasted in its repair. Our experts ensure that IPE decking is protected with a good sealant like IPE oil.

Benefits of IPE Oil

A sealant for IPE wood like IPE oil helps in providing a good coating to the wood, thereby offering a good cost advantage. If you are not sealing the wood, then you are exposing the expensive topcoat to outside environment, thereby wasting some of your money. So, consider a case where you can broaden the life of your IPE decking without the requirement of resurfacing. Simply by a coating of IPE oil. It offers

  • Protection from UV rays.
  • A quick method that liven up the appearance of the IPE deck.
